New project launched in Singapore to advance ammonia engines

An industry–academia collaboration has been launched at the National University of Singapore’s College of Design and Engineering (CDE) to accelerate the decarbonization of shipping by supporting the adoption of ammonia as a fuel.

Led by the NUS Centre for Hydrogen Innovations (CHI) and supported by the Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI), the three-year project aims to develop next-generation ammonia-fuelled marine engines with high efficiency and near-zero emissions. At its core is a novel in-cylinder reforming gas recirculation (IRGR) engine concept designed to overcome key barriers that have limited ammonia’s adoption as a marine fuel.
