Japanese endeavor looks to develop and advance hydrogen engines

Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., together with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), MOL Drybulk, Onomichi Dockyard, and ClassNK, are participating in a NEDO Green Innovation Fund Project to develop marine hydrogen engines and a hydrogen fuel supply system (MHFS).

The goal is to realize practical hydrogen-fueled merchant shipping. J-ENG has developed a large, low-speed, two-stroke hydrogen-fueled engine, 6UEC35LSGH. The world’s first full-scale vessel-use engine has already begun hydrogen co-firing across all cylinders, achieving over 95% hydrogen co-firing at 100% load while maintaining stable operation and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Further testing is ongoing to optimize performance.
