The Stena Sonangol Suezmax Pool (SSSP) has marked 20 years of operations with a pledge to grow further.
The joint venture between Swedish owner Stena Bulk and Angolan state oil company Sonangol now manages 20 of the million-barrel ships in its commercially managed fleet.
Co-manager Johan Jawert told TradeWinds: “We have grown the fleet the last couple of years from its low of 16 vessels.”
There are also two newbuildings due in 2027, ordered by Sonangol.
Jawert said the plan is to continue to grow the fleet.
“We are open for third-party vessels,” he added.
The majority of the suezmaxes come from two owners, but there are also ships operated by Greece’s Almi Tankers, AD Ports Group in Abu Dhabi and Germany’s Hammonia Reederei.
Established in 2005, the pool aimed to create a modern, efficient and collaborative operation capable of navigating market volatility while consistently delivering value and transparency to shipowners and charterers, it said.
“Over 20 years, the pool has evolved from a joint venture between the two founding partners, Stena Bulk and Sonanagol, into a fully open, globally recognised pool, welcoming other quality suezmax owners who share the pool’s commitment to quality, safety and operational excellence,” SSSP added.
The average age is 11 years, with a total capacity of 3.47m dwt.
Jawert, who is also head of Stena Bulk USA, said: “This anniversary is not only a celebration of our partnership but a testament to our adaptability to the market.”
“Since 2005, we’ve navigated a changing world, regulatory transformation, and new technologies, but the foundation of the Stena Sonangol Suezmax Pool has remained the same: collaboration, transparency, and therefore, shared success.”
SSSP added that it offers participating shipowners access to trading expertise, higher efficiency by increased fleet utilisation and economies of scale through port calls, bunkering and logistics, while maintaining full transparency through its pool point system.
Co-manager Aderito Pereira said its strength continues to come from its people on board and ashore.
“We have offices in Houston, Gothenburg and Singapore; our teams bring unmatched experience and commitment to delivering for our customers. We are proud of what we’ve achieved, and even more excited for what’s ahead,” he added.
SSSP uses Orbit MI, a real-time digital performance and analytics platform, to boost operational efficiency.
Beyond fleet and performance, the pool has also made significant contributions to maritime training and development.
It has helped to establish a maritime training centre in Angola.
Events were held for staff and clients in London and Houston to mark the anniversary.
