LR warns of growing mismatch between fleet investment and fuel availability
The growing gap between alternative-fuel vessel orders and the development of port bunkering infrastructure is raising concerns over fuel availability, vessel deployment and the ability of shipping companies to implement their decarbonization strategies, according to a new report by Lloyd’s Register (LR).
In its “Fuel for Thought: Ports” report, LR finds that 1,942 alternative-fuel-capable vessels were on order as of January 2026, with such ships accounting for 47% of global orderbook tonnage, citing Clarksons Research data. However, bunkering infrastructure has developed at markedly different speeds, leaving shipowners increasingly dependent on fuel availability along specific trading routes.
